Five simple ideas for mothers day gifts she’ll love

Mothering Sunday

In 2022 in the UK, Mothers Day, or Mothering Sunday as it is officially known falls on Sunday 27th March. Mothers Day is a time to celebrate everything Mum! All the things Mum helps you with, the things she does for you, the advice she gives you. Whether you call your Mum, Mum, Mother, Mummy, Mom, Mommy, Ma, Mama, Mammy, or anything else, this is the time to say thank you. Some people say we should give thanks all year round, which if course, is totally true, but Mothers Day is a great reminder, should we forget!

This will be my first ever year without my Mum, so although I am a Mum myself, I have mixed feelings about this coming weekend.

Five Ideas for Mothers Day Gifts

1. Bake Something

As this is a recipe blog, of course I am going to suggest you should bake something! Here a few delicious ideas which will definitely go down a treat.

Baklava: Sweet, Sticky, Nutty

St Clements Cake: Zingy Citrussy cake – the best cake ever in my late Mums eyes!

Coffee Cake: A very delicious cake flavoured with coffee (my favourite, hint hint)!

Biscoff Brownies: Soft squidgy brownies with biscoff.

Marbed Bundt Cake: Best of all, vanilla, chocolate and coffee (if you wish) cake marbled together.

2. Flowers

Most people appreciate flowers and they can be as cheap or as expensive as you like! For free flowers have a look in the garden and see what you can pick fresh (remember to leave a few of each growing though). Alternatively, have a look at the Olio app and see if you can grab a bunch for free! At the minute on Olio in my area there are daffodils posted regularly as well as bunches of more elaborate lillies. Remove any flowers past their best, trim the ends on the diagonal and place in fresh warm water with a spoonful of sugar. Remember to take the price label and any reduced stickers off and they’re ready to gift.

3. Personalised Vouchers

Mums are always so busy, so many things to do, so if you can gift them a personalised voucher or two, this will probably be very welcome. Of course, a regular voucher could be seen as no effort, or a last minute idea, so this is where personalisation is important. If you do buy a regular voucher for their favourite store, attach a note which says why you chose it. However, real personalised vouchers offer your time for something your Mum can exchange the voucher for. You create a handwritten (or typed) voucher stating what you are offering, such as: this voucher entitles Mum to… ; Mum, you can use this voucher to… ; Mum, I promise to… Then you add the terms and conditions such as when or for how long you will do this and an expiry date is always a good idea. Here are a few examples (which will differ according to you and your Mum’s age): Cutting the grass; walking the dog; a day off from babysitting; a day trip to the beach; homemade afternoon tea; a night off from washing up; breakfast in bed; a roast dinner etc.

4. Breakfast in bed

If you still live at home with your Mum, this one is a great gift to start the day with! You can of course, still do breakfast for your Mum if you can get to hers early enough and give her notice that you are coming. Obviously you know what your Mum likes and it depends how your cooking skills are but you can make this as easy as it needs to be for you. A nice glass of juice, or a cup of tea or coffee (or both) is a great start. A bowl of cereals (with the milk separately), maybe some fresh fruit and some yogurt on the side. You could make some toast and serve it with butter, jam, marmite or her favourite topping. How about croissants, pain au chocolat or other delicious pastries (Olio can probably help with that too). If you can cook, then pancakes or a full cooked breakfast will likely be enjoyed too!

5. A thoughtful gift

Of course, you can be traditional and buy your Mum something she would like. Think of what she likes to do, and choose something relevant. Does she like art, or pets, or tennis, or visiting historic places? If she likes gardening then maybe a new pair of gloves, a hand trowel or some quality hand cream. If she likes reading or cooking, then a nice book would be great. Anything for the kitchen (have a peak and see what looks like it needs replacing) if your Mum loves cooking or baking. Here are a few more ideas for you – I do receive a small commission if you click and purchase through these links (this is at no additional cost to you)! Thank you!

Make the day Memorable

Whatever you choose to do, make sure it is happy, joyous and fun! A hand written card or note with some thought to it can be treasured for much longer than one day. Whether you choose any of the five ideas above or something completely different, try and make the day special and memorable.
