Keep Warm & Happy with Spiced Chocolate Porridge

Start your day right with a delicious warming bowl of porridge! Now the colder weather has arrived it is great to have a hot breakfast to get you ready for the day ahead. 🙂

Now, I know many people say they are short of time in the morning, but this only takes 5 minutes to prepare and it will a) keep you full for several hours b) provide you with protein, fibre and carbohydrates, as well as magnesium, zinc, iron, phosphorus, manganese and B vitamins and c) will keep you toasty warm 😛 Not to mention it being delicious of course!

This spiced chocolate porridge is customisable as always but in several ways. Firstly, you can make the porridge with water or milk, or a mix of both. I usually make it with water, then add cold milk on top whilst eating – it’s just what we grew up doing! Secondly, to make it chocolatey you can simply add in a teaspoon of cocoa powder or, if you have any, add a splash of chocolate milk, or if you only have actual chocolate to hand, use a square or two of that (or do all three!) Lastly, I have used 1/4 teaspoon each of nutmeg and cinnamon, but you could use just cinnamon or add a bit of mixed spice or even ginger too. I have also added a sliced banana into the porridge when cooking and mashed it in – if you use a yellow banana (as opposed to a speckled or brown banana) then the taste of the porridge shouldn’t change but you will get a creamier and thicker porridge.

If you’re not used to making porridge, there is a basic recipe here – just add the chocolate, banana and spices in once you’ve started cooking it.

Serve the porridge immediately – I’ve added some natural yogurt, fresh blueberries and a grating of plain chocolate YUM! 😀 oh, and then I poured some cold oat milk over it! 😛

Hi Laurena, I like the idea of cooking porridge with water and adding milk afterwards? What a coincidence, I followed a Deliciously Ella cacao porridge recipe idea only this morning. Not really much of a coincidence for breakfast in winter but hey ho☺

Hello Eva… oh, great coincidence! I’ve been eating this for just over a week now and I still love it!?I’ve always made porridge with water (I’m guessing originally it was to save calories ?) and adding milk on top is a lovely contrast (I might add more milk than I would if I was cooking with it)! ? Have you had frosts there yet?

    Hi Laurena,
just read your post and in a minute I’m going into the kitchen and get it ready for tomorrow morning…. I happen to have a few overripe bananas I need to use and porridge is a perfect breakfast on a Sunday morning, when you can take it easy. I’ve just learnt that our schools will be closed next week as well, so it’s starting to get a bit depressing here…hope this nightmare ends soon!!!
